The Old Man and The Sea

Ernest Hemingway

Hemingway,Ernest. The Old Man And The Sea. Collier Books. New York, New York.1986.

The Old Man And The Sea is a story based on passion and fear written by the inspiring author Ernest Hemingway. It shows how you can use your fears to pursue your passions. This story teaches all readers how you can deal with the most devastating of situations.

The story The Old Man And The Sea is about a strong bond between a man and the sea. The old man in this story grew up on the sea with his father who teaches him all the wonders of sailing. They live with no worries or regrets and share a passion for adventure.

One day, a heavy storm rolled in while the two were sailing and they lost all control of their boat. The father went overboard and the young boy was left all alone to sail the big sea. Once the storm ended, the young boy was washed ashore on a desert island but all alone. He had to get back on the ship and find his father. The problem was getting the nerve to get back on the boat for he feared the great seas would take him too.

Many years on the island, the old man had been learning to survive alone, where he crashed a long time ago. There was no ships sailing by to help him and he was still haunted by the sea. Everyday he gazed at the ship that laid on the beach ready to sail again. He knew he wouldn't be able to survive on the island much longer and he would have to sail again.

A few years later, the old man was surprised to find another human living on the island. It was a young, very scared, yet beautiful lady who was hunting for food. He was scared yet intrigued to see another person. They learned to survive together on that island for many years. That was until the beautiful women became ill. The old man feared if he lost her he would die as well. He knew he had to take her somewhere to receive help. Though he feared the ocean, he feared losing her even more.

The old man repaired what he needed to on his ship and started to set sail. He slowly pulled out to sea, but was very cautious as he let go of the last rope holding him and his past together.

Ernest Hemingway starts you of with horror and sadness. You easily get attached to the old man's journey on this desert island as you wonder how he will survive.

3 out of 5 stars.
